Honestly the coconut bedding is trash for holding moisture and helping with hydration. i switched to soil while my Blackthroat was a baby and all of his shedding problems went away. He could be dehydrated from lack of humidity. what Kevin is saying is probably the reason but just saying the coconut bedding for monitors sucks

Kenan, noticed while watching video that Bobbi having problem breathing. He is taking huge breathes in. Check with Doctor and check x Ray if lungs are ok. Watch him yourself and see if you can get respiration rate for Bobbi.

This happened to my seven-year-old Argus monitor but she died within 3 days once she became lethargic.

It looks like it’s neurological or dehydration. You should try a different substrate and keep it a bit damper. Soak him a bit and take him outside a bit more for the sunlight but make sure he has plenty of water

Kenan after our convo how did things go??? This animal likely has an ecoli infection (or salmonella) which is lower GI flora in the stomach. This is likely due to “tainted” food that should be lightly cooked before being offered as a precaution. Once ingested the animal will appear sick as early as 24 hours or less. They cramp up, often vomit and become listless as they suffer pain and discomfort. Treatment is an antibiotic that treats ecoli and salmonella as well as ensuring water ingestion/hydration. Clearly basic husbandry and temps needed to keep the immune response on point. Don’t forget the foods we can find at the grocery needs to be handled as a “ bio threat” until it’s cooked a bit to kill pathogens which can hurt our critters. Kev

He might be trying to hibernate (brumation) if it's to cold but I'm not sure if that type of lizard does that I know that bearded dragons do. They slow their body down and sometimes they look really sick.

Have you haerd of Reptaid and Reptaid XL it all natural and can be giving to reptiles I haven't tried it yet but have ordered some for my reptiles!!

He could also feel over exposed and be depressed as a result of his shipping and new home. Put some silk plants in there and give him a LOT of foliage to hide among. More branches to climb. More to do. More places to be. Do not discount the effects of depression in animals. They can be profound!

I strongly prefer UV B tubelights. My indoor desert tortoise does much better with the tube lights.

The term you're looking for is FLAT. Animals in extremis are describes as "flattening" or "going flat."

This isn’t a uvb issue. If fed a proper diet they do r require uvb. Throwing him outside and stressing him out more wasn’t the answer either.

I’m sure you know this I would hope at lease. But they don’t actually require uvb if you feed them appropriately. My black throat I keep him on a hot spot of 140 degrees, the tiles under the basking spot are burn me hot. He can lay there for hours after a meal healthy strong big boy, crazy active, strong and bolts like crazy. Kept him for years without any uvb and grew him up without uvb.. heat and humidity and diet is most important IMO, uvb definitely doesn’t hurt but my boy grown into a massive strong fast beast with healthy vet reports.

I just started watching but of course I have to talk as I watch and find mistakes lol 1st. He wasn't quarantined :-/ he was too close to the people and other animals imo i would've kept him outside in a shed or barn I'm hoping that once you Get him outside he'll be away from the others, and I really hope he gets better really soon :-)

I think the problem was that you were using the wrong type of UV light. The coil type lights don't produce enough uvb, you will have much better coverage with a tube style light with a T5 or T8 desert bulb which ever one has the more appropriate uv index for a monitor

If you feed the monitors more of a snake diet, only offer invertebrate now and then, and feed more whole prey items such as dusted quail chicks/egg, small rat pups and mice fuzzy's for there current size, rather than chopped up chicken, pork, beef etc that has no internals. Then like with snakes a UV bulb is less of a concern.

I know you dont want to clutter these habitats up much to make it easy to go in and get them each night, but you should add a bit of extra security for them. Adding at least a small plant like a fern where the sun comes in will give them the option to only be partially exposed but still get their daily dose of UVB. Right now it's just a big open sky full of scary birds.

ya I would use a linear uvb that spans the length of the cage instead of a coil bulb because they hardly produce any uvb

Not saying that UVB isn't beneficial to them, but that's certainly not the cause of his issues. They appear very neurological, almost like he cooked.

I got sunburnt on an overcast day in Florida so my guess is theres more UVb even on an overcast day than hes getting with that small dome I hope everything works out and bobby gets back to good health. Great idea modifying those tortoise pens the shelter part will work great and all that open area for sunlight to get in will work wonders .

There isn’t as much of a green cast on camera from the UVB bulb in Bobby’s cage. If you compare it to Inky’s on camera, it looks very different. It may be an old or inefficient bulb. (Not scientific at all, just an observation!)

MBD is more slow onset and insidious. A parasite /pathogen seems more likely due to the rapid onset. Any chance of heavy metals exposure in any of the foods? Lead causes lethargy and confusion. Sounds like he was dehydrated. You are such an excellent steward of all you animals. Idk how you keep track of how everyone's doing! You are amazing! (Slinky told me!)

I use those long uvb bulbs in my so it gets everywhere. I live in Michigan so I can’t really have them outdoors plus lots of stray cats around ugh

Just a tip. If it is a normal screw in bulb the uvb output pointing strait down is almost zero. To effectively use a screw in uvb u want to use a hood like an aquarium hood so the ligh can sit horizontally. Also a screen can cut that already small amount of uvb in half.

What level is your UVB? Black throats need level 7309 is my translation holds

Sorry man but I dont think that's his issue. Lack of UVB would not cause that to happen especially so quickly. Looks neurological but could be not fully digested food, he does look a little bloated, and needs a hotter basking spot would be my guess. Or too hot?

I’ve kept many monitors and had 3 blackthroats before my house fire. I would say if he’s lethargic than it’s most likely heat and hydration. The basking spot may not be hot enough as these African monitors are sun worshippers. Also adding more hiding logs and hiding spots should prove beneficial for the animal as babies are more cryptic than the adults. So I would say push the hot spot to 120-130 cool end mid to upper 70s. And plenty of levels for him to bask. Also humidity areas for him to help hydrate himself.

I think it’s not hot enough in Bobby’s enclosure. Black throats like it to be reaalllly really hot. And his basking light isn’t putting off enough heat for him especially being so young. That can cause them to be lethargic as I’m sure you know. I’d up your temp for both of them.

You might want to give them time... all that moving around is stressful and dangerous for them even though you’re excited give them a few days

You can totally tell that he is in pain. Animals try to back up. It looks like they are trying to back up away from the pain . It looks so sad Canon I'm so sorry your little lizard isn't feeling good.

I had the same problem with mine. About 1 or 2 days after he arrived, I looked in on him. Anyone would have thought MBD. Slight head shake, listless, and picking him up, he was limp. After holding him for a while, he started to perk up. I realized the heat of my hand was warming him up so I dialed in his temperatures to the higher side of their liking and next morning it was like nothing was wrong. He is now a big boy. Healthy and ball trained. Try warmer enclosure.

I had a very similar thing happen to my ackie monitor. All he needed was some heavilydusted pinky mice and a stronger uvb and he was good as new in a day or so

idk if this is legal for me to say but i was scrolling through pet finder and there’s a monitor for sale for 45$ in ohio and it’s being kept in a glass fish tank someone pls save it i’m too far

I know they're expensive, but try a Mercury vapor bulb. They give both UVA&B, and heat. Probably need a 100 watt.

Put the lil one on a flat surface where you can see his toes clearly. MBD in the early stages will cause toe twitches in the toes, most visible in the larger toes on the back feet. It's not easy to catch at first but as soon as he's still you'll see it. A strip fluorescent UV bulb better than a point source. Hope he does better. The calcium will help. It might be worth giving him a little bathe - sometimes they can get a bit bunged up - but in non chlorinated water. Another remote possibility might be a fungal infection. A much finer substrate is a must as soon as possible like coconut soil mixture or something like that. Good luck.

I believe it was an issue with humidity. That indoor enclosure looked bone dry. I don't think it had anything to do with UV.
