Now that we know genetics we can domesticate a species fairly rapidly. Reptiles are already domesticated. Heavenly bred ones like corn snakes and leopard geckos have changed somewhat from their wild condition.

Yay science rant time! Lichen breaks down minerals in rocks, particularly carbon, calcium, salts, and most importantly, nitrogen compounds. It can't do that without that complex symbiosis everyone is talking about on here. Lichen is really an amazing symbiotic organism, for being so simple. It uses mycelium from the fungus part to break down the rock and feed nutrients in microtubules to the algal layer above it, that algae uses photosynthesis to absorb sunlight and digest the trapped compounds absorbed from the rock. Like we have organs in our bodies that cooperate to make us survive, lichen is made up of those two parts that function like organs, keeping the organism alive. Lichen is some of the simplest life on this planet. It just goes to show how simple organic life evolved from a similar plan. Warning to Kenan, most lichens aren't even remotely edible and are extremely toxic to most animals over time. Some animals, like various arthropods, consume it in order to concentrate and build up these toxins that they use to create poisons used ward off predators. In my personal opinion, tortoises really shouldn't eat it. They will, though, and it isn't understood how harmful it can be to them because tortoises are incredibly hearty animals with high tolerance to many kinds of poisons and toxins. They don't know any better. They are basically toddlers who will put whatever they want in their mouths, like Kenan's shoes for example. Not delicious. The tortoises are just so hearty that not much seems to phase them. I'm not sure what prolonged ingestion can do to a tortoise, but who knows? They seem healthy and happy enough to me and Kenan does a fine job of keeping poisonous plants and such off his property. Most of it is obvious, save for the water hemlock in the drainage near the front of his driveway in last spring's videos and the jimsonweed in the open field next to that "boneyard" during that summer's videos. That's the plant that puts out bell-shaped flowers that are pretty big and don't look like columbine. Those are some seriously nasty plants, but they are pretty easy to kill with just a bit of ammonia, if you don't want to use common weed killer.

Hey Kenan, I remember you saying that you and your family were thinking about getting a pet dog. I don't know which breed you guys are planning on, but perhaps you could train it to sniff out or find the stray tortoises whenever you're having trouble finding them!! Kenan, it's quite the opposite. Two different species breeding and making offspring isn't creating a new species. It's signifying that the two different species are closely related and relatively recently split from each other. It could be looked at as going back in time and seeing their last common ancestor.

And that they are the past result of hybridizing along time ago, having 72% Gray wolf-(Canis lupus) DNA and 28% Ethiopian wolf-(Canis simensis) DNA ancestry.

As you mentioned early in the video, hybrids are usually infertile. Later you speculated that maybe hybridization leads to evolution. By my biology education (several years old and possibly outdated) the definition of a species is that they can make viable offspring. (viable in this context meaning that they could reproduce themselves). So a horse and donkey are different species because their offspring, the mule, is infertile. So I'm thinking that if the lepracottas turn out to be viable we would have to say that they are divergent lines of the same species in the first place. It's the divergent lines, caused by environmental or other external factors, that the theory of evolution pins as the cause of new species evolution. But first the microevolution would give rise to same species dimorfism, and then to subspecies which would still be able to make viable offspring. At some point way down the line the subspecies would become so different that their genes would no longer be compatible enough to make viable offspring. So that was a little more rambly and disjointed that it wasn't my head but I think you understand what I'm trying to say Thank you for all that you do we love your Channel

15 өдрийн өмнө
Zebedee madness

Mule males are infertile, as is the case with most hybrids but not all. So breeding a male mule to a female mule = no offspring, due to the male. However if you back breed a female mule to a parent species like a male donkey, this can and has resulted in a 75%donkey/25%horse hybrid offspring. Hybrid males was the problem when they was creating the Bengal cat and Savannah cat, early in the crossing the hybrid males was infertile, so they had to keep back breeding the hybrid females to the pure domestic cat, till the male was fertile at about F5-F6. So being that Lumpy is a pure male parent species, to the hybrid females. There is a fair chance of 25%/75% offspring.

I get your point re breeding cats/dogs. However, you're now mixing species. Sculcata tortoitses are a vulnerable species, and by mixing them with other species, you're not helping Sculcata tortoises survive. You wouldn't want galapagos tortoises to be mixed either right? (as in, the subspecies)
